Pure Country = Pure Bliss

I am uber-excited that AMC is promoting Pure Country on Broadway.

I love country music. I love Broadway. The marriage of the two sounds like the best thing since Johnny Cash and June Carter tied the knot.

Here are my top 3 reasons for loving country music, besides, of course, the obvious awesome music and rhythms:

1. Words. I can understand all the words to the songs, and I love words, and the words add up to …

2. Stories. Country music has great stories and characterizations. And, of course along with the stories comes the outrageous …

3. Drama. Oh, the drama! An innocent man getting hanged sticking up for his murderous sister (“The Night the Lights Went Down in Georgia”), an alcoholic man hitting rock bottom (“Sunday Morning Coming Down”) …

And, of course, the drama of rather attractive men singing songs like “Let’s Make Love” (Tim McGraw) “Thunder Rolls,”(Garth Brooks) and the catchy ‘n kitchy “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” (Kenny Chesney).

And so I wait with baited breath for Spring, 2009 when Pure Country hits the stage.

But that’s OK, because it gives this Queens/Jersey gal time to practice key country phrases, like …

“Y’all come back now, ya hear?”

Book Report

So I’ve started contributing to Haunternet.com AMC’s online publication. You should check it out: it’s the world’s largest haunted house directory and Tim Haskell, Haunternet’s editor in chief and Creative Director of AMC–Events, also uploads tons of horror-industry news every day. If you have a taste for the macabre, it’s your kinda spot.

Me, I’m not so horror-y, but I am a raging bookaholic, so it seemed pretty normal for me to write a review of Joe Hill’s novel, Heart-Shaped Box, which came out last year. I plan to make regular contributions to the site, whether via book reviews or in what Tim is calling “The Hater” column, in which I’ll catalogue all the stuff that bugs me about horror movies. (In addition to reading like a maniac, I’m also a world-class complainer, if I do say so myself!)

So check out Haunternet, for the Haunternet Girls if nothing else. They’re scantily clad! They’re very beautiful! They’re in, uh, precarious situations! Hey, whatever, the photos are gorgeous (particularly in the “Mimi” series!) and we all know what sells!

The Cha Cha Cha of Comedy

The Holy Trinity. The Three Musketeers. Easy as 1, 2, 3.

There’s something very special about the number 3.

Years and years ago, I saw a fabulous documentary on comedy that featured the writers of the Sid Ceasear show, with the old funny men sitting around chewing the fat about the good ol’ days. In passing, they described the magic of the number 3 — that most of the time funny comes in threes: in a classic joke the 3rd man who walks into a bar is the funniest, in a sitcom the 3rd speaker in an exchange is the funniest, in a stand-up narrative the 3rd thing to happen is the funniest.

And ever since seeing that documentary, I “count” any comedy I see or hear, at least on a subconscious level.

1 2 ha ha ha. 1 2 ha ha ha.

6 things that have nothing in common

  • After shooting testimonials with Jaisen and Sumeet for Almost an Evening I realized that everyone is camera shy. Am I the only video whore left in the world?
  • Pure Country, Pure Country, Pure Country!
  • Using a video game to advertise a product is called an advergame. huh. It had a name all this time.
  • 75 degree weather in early April is only awesome when you can go outside and enjoy it.
  • J.R. Horne is snort-muscle-milk-out-your-nose hilarious.
  • If you are French and you abuse heavy file sharing, your ISP will ban you permanately from the internet. dites-moi plus de mon ami

Mark Linn-Baker, you got Rick Rolled!

Mark Linn-Baker, we love you. See his brilliant performance in Almost an Evening.

See Bronson Pinchot in his brilliant performance of Rick Astley (good catch, Jaisen!):

Fall in love with Viral Videos

Xanadu needed a viral video. We wanted to create something that was both funny, and interactive. We contacted anyone who had a video on Youtube that pictured themselves falling, skating or just being totally 80’s! It worked! We got an amazing response; so many people let us use the videos and we were able to create this awesome finished product.

Comfortable Content Management With CushyCMS

With all due respect and reverence to Wordpress, the awesome open-source content management system that powers this blog, as well as a number of sites I’ve personally had the pleasure of working on, there’s a new kid on the block that just might have what it takes to pull me away from the tried-and-true, and venture out into uncharted waters.

I’m talking about CushyCMS, a super-simple system created by Stateless Systems (of RetailMeNot reknown). It’s designed primarily for web designers looking to add a no-fuss way to allow clients to update content on their sites. For each element in the HTML that the designer wishes to give permission to edit, s/he need only add a simple class="cushycms".

No fussing with PHP, no costly time spent trying (in vain) to enforce style conventions and convince content editors not to randomly make things bold, italic, purple, and struck-through, or attempt to explain how to keep the code clean and semantic and valid. Stress-free, beautiful, and highly user-friendly.

CushyCMS is obviously not suited for every project. The fact that it’s a fully hosted solution makes things simple to set up, but gives you less flexibility down the line than something like Wordpress or Drupal, for example. But for the right client, CushyCMS seems like it would take a huge amount of hassle out of the process and let designers focus on designing, and writers focus on writing.

I’m excited to give CushyCMS a test run in the coming weeks, and will definitely write about how that goes. The site is in private beta right now, but should be open to the public on April 15.

Here’s a great introductory video from TechCrunch that really highlights how simple CushyCMS is to set up and use.

My television debut, etc.

I don’t like to brag, but the Vineyard Theatre’s God’s Ear commercial we created just happens to be my acting debut! Don’t blink though, or you’ll miss my appearance. Yes, that’s me, looking morose (and maybe a little cold . . . it was dang chilly that day!). I think you’ll agree it’s the ne plus ultra of tooth fairy performances in a thirty-second commercial! Look at Jim’s post from April 3 to see for yourself.
